FLUM “Tilt Test” EP release

TILT TEST - EP di 3 pezzi uscito 8 maggio 2026.

Queste sono le cose che mi appassionano! Tipo a fine marzo mi scrive Thomas su whatsapp. Siccome passerà più tempo del previsto per la stampa del loro vinile registrato in dicembre, vorrebbero registrare 3 pezzi da far uscire in anticipo, però dobbiamo fare una cosa veloce, tutto in un giorno. Bene, io il 5 aprile rientro, quindi si può fare! 

Adrenalina a mille, senza riflettere, ci siamo ritrovati il sabato successivo da loro, registrato tutto il materiale in un giorno (prima batteria, poi chitarra, poi basso, poi voci, poi mani!)

Immediatezza, è il termine che userei per descrivere la produzione di questo EP. I pezzi suonavano bene già da soli. Erano qualcosa che era già nell'aria, e siamo stati fortunati, e credo anche bravi, sicuramente loro nella performance, a catturarla al momento piu opportuno.

Sia in registrazione che in post ho anche utilizzato per la prima volta outboard gear. Il che mi ha aiutato a ridurre il processamento delle tracce, lavorando di più a riscoprire il suono originale e mantenerlo il più naturale possibile per quanto ho potuto (ad esempio mi sono imposto di non usare gate sulla batteria, se non su timpano ahimè dove in alcuni frangenti ho dovuto però ricorrere temporaneamente).

Mi piace registrare chitarra e basso con multipli microfoni, allineati in fase, e aggiungere poi un condensatore a distanza uomo dall'ampli. Per generi più tight la cosa può risultare problematica, se non viene allineata in post, ma per brani e sonorità più ariose e organiche quel leggero scostamento aggiunge un certo qualcosa. In più sul basso ho anche usato un microfono sul retro. Maggiori dettagli nella sezione Sessions.

Il risultato è che in questo EP tutto è continuamente in bilico tra un qualcosa di ricercato, fatto con criterio, e il marasma piu totale, cosa che rappresenta in modo genuino l'essenza dei brani, che rappresenta quello che i FLUM volevano, un prodotto grezzo, ma al punto giusto.

I primi commenti dei vari pre-ascolti di amici e aficionados erano tutti del tipo "Che razza di bomba". Non vincerà certo il grammy per la migliore produzione, ma finora lo considero il mio lavoro venuto meglio. E comunque, gran pezzoni, bravi FLUM! 

I FLUM hanno inoltre suonato live il 13 giugno a Clavais (UD), dove li ho supportati come fonico, assieme ad altre band locali quali Dissociative TV e Mordechai.

FLUM “Tilt Test” EP release

TILT TEST - 3-song EP released May 8, 2026. These are the things I'm passionate about! Like at the end of March, Thomas messaged me on WhatsApp. Since it's going to take longer than expected to press their vinyl, recorded in December, they'd like to record three songs to release early, but we have to do something quick, all in one day. Well, I'm back on April 5th, so it can be done! With all the adrenaline pumping, without thinking, we met up the following Saturday at their place and recorded everything in one day (first drums, then guitar, then bass, then vocals, then hands!) Immediacy is the word I'd use to describe the production of this EP. The songs sounded good on their own. They were something that was already in the air, and we were lucky—and I think also clever, certainly them in the performance—to capture it at the right moment. Both in recording and post-production, I also used outboard gear for the first time. This helped me reduce the amount of processing I did on the tracks, working harder to rediscover the original sound and keep it as natural as possible (for example, I forced myself not to use gates on the drums, except on the floor tom, where, unfortunately, I had to resort to it temporarily in some situations). If you're interested in the details, I refer you to the "Sessions" section of the website, where I describe all the miking setups and other details. I like to record guitar and bass with multiple mics, phase-aligned, and then add a condenser at a man's length from the amp. For tighter genres, this can be problematic if it's not aligned in post, but for more airy and organic songs and sounds, that slight shift adds a certain something. I also used a rear mic on the bass. More details in the Sessions section. The result is that everything on this EP is constantly balanced between something refined, meticulously crafted, and utter chaos, which truly represents the essence of the songs, what FLUM wanted: a raw, but perfectly balanced product. The initial comments from various pre-listening sessions from friends and aficionados were all along the lines of "What a blast." It certainly won't win a Grammy for Best Production, but so far I consider it my best work. And anyway, great songs, well done, FLUM! FLUM also played live on June 13th in Clavais (UD), where I supported them as a sound engineer, along with other local bands like Dissociative TV and Mordechai.
