[IT] Recap di Agosto

A presto!

[EN] August recap

Yes, indeed—this August was a month where me too I gave in to the general "closed for the holidays" mindset. It was a month where I felt the need to recharge—after a particularly intense and grueling work stint—and sought out some rest and that "sleep of the just" (as Bettinelli put it) to get back on my feet. It was a bit of "down time," useful for processing things and—regarding music production—for rethinking and reshaping my path moving forward. The month was marked more by parties and concerts—especially "secret shows"—than by indoor sessions in the studio or rehearsal room. There were various live performances where I could either perform, handle the technical side (mixing, etc.), or oversee a live recording, depending on the occasion. I truly appreciated these opportunities to spend time with my "musical" friends. It was also a month for DIY experimentation, such as building a simple microphone from scratch. It was a month where I wanted to start building a network with producers abroad, visiting their studios or connecting via remote conversations. Finally, it was a month of exploration, scouting locations for future recordings—ranging from musicians' basements that need fixing up to old cinemas or theaters, and even—why not?—abandoned warehouses. If you have any other ideas in mind, let me know! All in all, the month flew by so fast that I feel a twinge of sadness knowing I have to head back to work soon; at the same time, though, I feel energized to kick off the initiatives already in the pipeline over the coming months!

You can find the highlights of this August in the snippets below—see you soon!

[IT] Al seguito dei FLUM

Whenever I get back from work, FLUM is always the first act I turn to in order to reset and reconnect with the musical world I discuss on this blog and the site in general. So, I was delighted to catch their two live shows in August: - the first concert on August 8th at the Pietrasonica Festival in Gemona (Udine)—a festival that surely needs no introduction—where they opened for Mr. Bison and Kanaan; - the second date on August 29th in Caneva di Tolmezzo. At these shows, alongside a setlist featuring tracks from the EP released in May and their upcoming album, the band also performed new material that blended perfectly with their earlier songs. Furthermore, the second date introduced me to yet another musical gem in the Tolmezzo area: a secret show celebrating a mutual friend's birthday. I even performed there myself—playing an acoustic set with Thomas for the first time—and recorded their live performance to add to my resume (and potentially a portfolio, should they decide to release any tracks from the night). The sound production for the event was handled by the legendary Gianni from Tolmezzo. He’s a seasoned pro with whom I had a passionate discussion about production; he shared stories from his live sound career—such as working with Billy Cobham. Anyone who knows Gianni knows he’s quite a character, but he is also incredibly knowledgeable. He offered frank yet constructive feedback to everyone—for instance, he identified the make of my acoustic guitar just by listening to it, and praised the "American" style of Alessandro (FLUM’s drummer), noting how he always plays ahead of the beat and drives the rhythm forward. I also want to mention the highly skilled Giulio, the sound engineer for the evening; naturally, we ended up talking gear and swapping opinions on microphones, preamps, and the like. So, thanks again to FLUM for these two nights! P.S. Heads up: starting in October, we plan to change the world by joining forces—stay tuned!

[IT] Flamis Fest - 22 Agosto

A chiudere la serata Gab De La Vega, che come ha postato sui suoi profili social ha mostrato come uno show acustico possa svilupparsi in un vero e proprio mosh pit: "Who said acoustic shows can’t be wild? I called for a circle pit, a stage dive and a wall of death at a secret show in a living room in the Carnia Alps, and you didn’t disappoint.”

What can I say? For me, this event was the musical highlight of the summer!

It was the long-awaited opening of the Carnia retreat belonging to Giangy (vocals and guitar for The Bonfire Kids) and his partner Ilenia. The event centered around an intimate "secret show" among friends, featuring the inevitable "Disco Mannaro" DJ set and acoustic performances by local artists and bands. There were also out-of-town guests of the caliber of Gab De La Vega and Tim Vantol, plus a "super guest"—Yotam Ben Horin—who stepped in at the last minute (check out the lineup on the flyer below).

For my part, I was delighted to contribute to the party by handling the mixing desk and technical setup for every performance.

The shows kicked off outdoors with Reclàme—an interesting acoustic trio. I really enjoyed chatting with them, and we even discussed potential future recordings.

Right after them, I made a brief acoustic appearance myself—"Go Acoustic," just as I’d mentioned back in June :)

Next up were Sneaky Toy, who played acoustic versions of songs from their repertoire. In my opinion, these arrangements gain harmonic intensity and really showcase Lalla’s consistently excellent vocals—especially thanks to the vocal interplay with Thomas and Simone!

Then it was time for the hosts, The Bonfire Kids. They managed to keep the whole crowd gathered in front of the stage throughout their set, even as raindrops—and eventually a proper downpour—began to fall.

Once their concert ended, outdoor conditions were no longer suitable for playing, so we executed a Formula 1-style pit stop: we moved everything inside to the retreat’s living room, reconnected the gear, and got the party going again. Tim Vantol was the one to put the venue to the test, delivering a stirring performance—rich in dynamics and melody, yet still packed with his signature high energy.

Next up was Yotam; despite playing only a few songs, he captivated and enchanted everyone present with his guitar and vocals, performing a setlist that was, as always, flawless. (P.S. The story of how I brought Yotam to the party is another highlight of my August; you can find it in the post at this link.

Closing out the evening was Gab De La Vega, who—as he shared on his social media—demonstrated how an acoustic set can turn into a full-blown mosh pit: "Who said acoustic shows can’t be wild? I called for a circle pit, a stage dive and a wall of death at a secret show in a living room in the Carnia Alps, and you didn’t disappoint."

While I focused on the setlist in the notes above—and the music was indeed the glue that held the whole party together—I also want to use this post to thank Giangy and Ilenia for all the work they put into making this event happen; it brought friends together and allowed us to spend a wonderful day as a group—something that, unfortunately, happens all too rarely.

[IT] Esperimento Sub-Kick

More news to come, una volta finalizzato.

With no recording sessions scheduled for August, I decided to have some fun experimenting, and eventually gave in to the urge to build a "subkick" mic.

For this build, I used an Audibax GR12-AR speaker—a 12-inch woofer with a rigid suspension, 8-ohm impedance, and 150W RMS power handling. I soldered the red XLR wire to the speaker's negative terminal and the white wire to the positive terminal.

I mounted the whole setup on a guitar stand, and that was it!

The amazing thing is that it worked right away, despite my rather poor soldering skills ;)

Beyond the standard tests to see how it captured percussive transients, I decided to use it to record a rotating appliance found in almost every home—a washing machine spin cycle—as a source of "rotating white noise." I plan to use this as a starting point, applying gating and sound design processing to create sounds that will inspire a new track—something in the "post-prog-something" vein—which I’m seriously considering adding to the AWCS repertoire! More news to follow once it's finalized.

In any case, it’s always good to be bold, because inspiration is just waiting to be summoned in the most bizarre ways—as Jeff Tweedy would say!

[IT]Da Legoland a Gear land: visita al Koenich Studio

[EN] From Legoland to Gear land: visit to Koenich Studio

“Heavy music deserves thoughtful production” - this is one of the main concepts from Franz, owner of Koenich Studio, located nearby Munich.

I got in touch with him via Instagram, after the release of Tilt Test by FLUM, as he gave very kind and warm feedback on that release, that I couldnt help following his profile and eventually interact with him. Not only usual texting, but a genuine interest to dig into technical territory and giving each other feedbacks on some recent works.

So after exchanging some messages, one of his text was an open invitation to visit his place whenever I may have passed by Munich. And being on family holiday at Legoland was the perfect fit to stop by on the way back home to Italy. After playtime with my son and wife at the park, this was my time for a play park!

Franz’s studio is full of amazing equipment, always ready to capture immediately the moment, such a great place! So while my son and wife were building a lego skeleton, me and Franz went through signal chains, studio gear, live and club sound - and plenty of audio geek talk packed into one hour! IT was so good to finally meet in person and exchange some engineer-to-engineer thoughts.

Franz is not only skilled and equipped with excellent gear, but he is also a kind and calm person who knows how to put you at ease right away—a great talent to have in a recording setting. So, after this first visit, I hope there will be future opportunities to meet again and, why not, even collaborate!

Visit his website www.koenichsound.com and have a listen to some of his works!

[IT] Food for thoughts: E nei mesi dispari?

A gem every page - Bought this through the pre-sale, worth every page of it! I was reading this chapter about mixing some days ago, and this gave me a strong backup for trusting myself more on this practice I was/am secretly applying within my own productions! The whole book has this kind of gems, that give a new perspective, and it is a guided trip to "get to the core" of music production for me...I am almost finished with the first read, but I think I owe a second read of the full book to soak its meaning and its sense even more

[EN] Food for thoughts: what about odd months?

When I’m abroad for work—far from my gear and various projects—I stay connected to this world through reading. Below is a roundup of books I consider worth reading (and sometimes re-reading) to cement concepts, delve into technical topics, and engage with internationally renowned figures to gain a deeper understanding of the craft.

Mixerman's Ultimate Guide to Producing Records, Music and Songs – I think I devoured this book in about three or four days, then went back to read the sections that resonated most with me at a more leisurely pace. It was a real eye-opener; the book strips away the myths surrounding music production, revealing that the ultimate solution is simply to capture the best possible sound with the gear you already have. Below is the message I originally posted on social media—which Mixerman later asked me to add as an Amazon review:

"A gem on every page – Bought this during the pre-sale; it’s worth every page! I was reading a chapter on mixing a few days ago, and it gave me the confidence to trust my instincts regarding a technique I was—and still am—secretly using in my own productions. The whole book is full of gems like that, offering fresh perspectives and acting as a guided journey to the 'core' of music production. I’ve almost finished my first read-through, but I feel I owe the book a second read to fully absorb its meaning and essence."

Drum Sound And Drum Tuning – I tried to internalize the concepts in this book before recording the last two BeerBong singles (released in 2025). I drew inspiration from it prior to those sessions—which marked one of the first times I personally directed the drum recording process. I believe it offers an excellent analysis of the drum sound spectrum and, more importantly, how to prepare the kit for recording. It was incredibly useful to me; it’s a book well worth reading and keeping in your library.

Mastering in the Box with Reaper – I found this to be a very honest book; it explains many concepts from a practical standpoint and offers the chance to reinforce them through exercises available via online downloads. It’s a book I’ve revisited from time to time whenever I needed to check specific details for my own productions. As the title suggests, this version is specific to Reaper, though editions dedicated to other DAWs exist as well—so look for the one that suits you if you're interested!

Recording Unhinged – Sylvia Massy – Sylvia is certainly a figure who needs no introduction. She has recorded many of the bands and albums that shaped my musical upbringing—Tool and Soundgarden, to name a few. The book describes and illustrates some of her techniques with such simplicity that it really highlights the depth of her experience. Plus, it’s packed with quotes from renowned names, and the format—filled with sketches and drawings—makes it a really fun read.

How to Write One Song – Jeff Tweedy – The central theme of this book is getting lost in the creative process as the ultimate goal of songwriting. It’s an easy, breezy read—perfect for summer, perhaps while lounging under a beach umbrella with a drink and a straw. The book also includes exercises that, if put into practice, help "unleash" your creativity. For me, the most eye-opening exercise was writing lyrics from the perspective of an insect at a human barbecue!

That's all, folks!

Prossimo aggiornamento ad Ottobre! Next update in October!
